the first person i looked for was john kerry and then john mccain. they said yes, there is a hold but we're trying to work through it. i said, you know, if you can't get this done and done quickly, then i think there has to be a speech on the floor that said holding pete peterson in a p.o.w. camp for five years is bad enough, but the senate holding his nomination as ambassador is unforgivable. we need to vote on pete peterson. he's given so much to this country. well, it's a credit to john kerry and john mccain that they quieted down this new member of the senate, said let us get this done quietly, and they did. pete peterson went on to serve as ambassador in vietnam. he was a widower at the time and met a lovely young woman, an australian woman, vietnamese-australian woman. they are married. they now live in australia. we keep in touch from time to time. i think of that moment in time in our history when john kerry and john mccain really showed what diplomacy and careful consideration can do. we not only established relations with vietnam, we sent a

i was very honored when john asked me to take part in this because john is the right choice . carrying forward the obama administration foreign-policy, and i urge his speedy confirmation. as we have heard from both the chairman and the ranking member and just now, senator warren, he will bring a record of and service that is exemplary. he has a few of the world that he has acted on first as the youngest, returning veterans from vietnam who appeared before this committee through the time that he served with such distinction as its chairman. he has been avow department this administration and to me personally. he has fought for our diplomats and development experts. he understands the value of investing in america's global lead. and as we work to implement the accountability review board recommendations, he is committed to doing whatever it takes to prevent another attack and protect our people in posts around the world. now, working together, we have achieved a great deal, but the state department and usaid have a lot of unfinished business from afghanistan to non-proliferation

well, john, thank you. i have and you know this because we've talked about this at great length, i have a complete understanding of where you are coming from this and what you are trying to say about the way i do want to say to you that i don't want inquisitive nose or curiosity about what possibilities might exist to be translated and optimism. i don't have optimism. i had hoped because the easiest way to resolve it would be if they -- if together we were able to find some track that changed the equation and the calculation. but i think everybody worries about, john, is that if you have a complete inclusion of the state's, nobody has clear definition of how you put those pieces back to work number one. and number two, you have a greater risk with respect to the chemical weapons. that's why i want to get in and see what the contingency plans are because i can't measure the risk without having the sense of what is on the table. what i do know is that there are a lot of weapons there. they are not hesitating

president, i rise today to honor the life, legacy and service of a dear friend, john edward bresch. jack led a life filled with compassion. he worked tirelessly for everyone to have access to affordable, quality health care, especially needy children and families. his heart was as big as heaven. but jack's life was also a life of great humor. anybody who knew him also knew his warm and infectious laugh. it was a sure sign that jack was somewhere nearby because you could almost hear his laughter before you saw his face. and everybody was glad to see jack coming their way. he truly never met a stranger. sadly, we won't be able to hear that distinct laughter again. jack passed away on september 1, 2012, surrounded by his family after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. from the moment of his fateful diagnosis until the day he left us, we saw him in great and courage, dignity and humility, joy, and yes laughter. and so much love and gratitude lived out on a daily basis that even in our sorrow, his memory will never be lost. tomorrow, jack will be laid to rest in our na
